According to EMC Compliance (UK), the CISPR family of emissions standards — CISPR 11, CISPR 14-1, and CISPR 32 (EN 55032) — gets treated as a universal EMC checklist far more often than its actual scope justifies, since each was written for a specific product category. The piece walks through the mechanics: conducted emissions testing covers 0.15–30 MHz, radiated emissions covers 30–1000 MHz, and test setups are deliberately configured to maximize measured disturbances rather than represent a best-case installation. Products are sorted into Class A (industrial) or Class B (residential/light-industrial), each with its own limit lines on the conducted and radiated plots. The article's most useful point for engineers is statistical: a CISPR limit line isn't a guarantee every unit you ship will pass. As the piece frames it, the standard is written so that '80% of units will comply with the limit at an 80% confidence level,' typically verified against a minimum sample of five production units — meaning a single passing prototype tells you less than most engineers assume.

Why it matters for RF/EMC design

Because CISPR limits are a statistical target rather than a hard ceiling, shielding and gasket margin needs to be sized against production spread, not against one clean pre-compliance sample — a design that scrapes by on a five-unit test batch can still throw outliers on the line. This is a strong argument for building 3–6 dB of headroom into can/gasket selection on any seam or aperture that showed marginal margin in pre-scan, especially for Class B designs where the residential limit line leaves less room for unit-to-unit variation than Class A.
